Baabayn is all about healing, but we are not a medical centre.
We believe that our people heal through connecting. Connecting with each other, and connecting with our culture.
We like to say that we are a community, not a service. We do services for people who need our help, such as advocating for them with government departments. That’s important, but it isn’t the key point.
At Baabayn’s heart are four Aboriginal “Elders making a difference,” resilient women who deeply understand the challenges that face First Nations people in Outer Western Sydney.
We hold gatherings and yarn-ups that bring people together, breaking isolation and building a sense of belonging. We have members, participants, contributors—not clients. That’s powerful.
We run programs, such as Elders' Gathering, Homework Club, Mums and Bubs and Healing Circles, and we assist individuals and families with a wide range of practical needs. Besides providing social and emotional well-being support, we also run big community events, such as our annual NAIDOC Week celebration and, occasionally, the popular “Mount Druitt Says No to Ice Day” festival at the Mt Druitt pool.
During this past year we started Baabayn Publications, which now has two titles: "Why Our Children Are Proud to be Aboriginal" by the young artists in our Mums' group, and "Fences and Walls," a workbook for psychologists. During COVID, we created some video resources to help our mob to stay connected and cope with the psychological challenges of the two lockdowns--see https://www.youtube.com/@baabaynmediaproductions1037 .
We are very proud of the organisation we have built over the years. What we most need help with now is funds to keep our wonderful Aboriginal staff members employed. Staffing costs are always rising, but grant income does not always keep pace. We need your support to make sure we can pay all our staff and keep their good work going.
At Baabayn, we consistently do what we can to support community members of all ages. We are grateful to the generous hearts of all our donors.
