On October 26th Kate and Steve will be paddling the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic. A kayak race on the Hawkesbury River which runs 111km from Windsor to Brooklyn. The race starts at 5pm and we hope to reach the finish line at around 3am. It will be dark, and we won't be using lights to navigate.
Why?
Because the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic raises funds for The Arrow Foundation which provides funding for patient services and research for Australians with blood diseases like Leukaemia.
This year, we are dedicating our paddle and fund raising efforts to Steve's good friend and workmate Wendy Berrill who has been valiantly battling cancer for several years. Wendy has been admitted to hospital this week for what she believes may be the final time. After the event, we want to present Wendy's husband Alex and two young children a certificate acknowledging the donations made in her name.
In 1976 the 10 year survival rate for Leukaemia patients was 7%. 40 Years later thanks in part to the types of research funded by The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic and partner Arrow Foundation it had climbed to 47%.
