Every dance work you’ve ever seen began somewhere you didn’t see, a studio or empty space, with an artist willing to try something that might not work.
For independent dance and body-based artists, that time and space is hard to find, and harder to pay for. Studio1 exists to change that. As Queensland’s only dedicated home for independent dance and body-based practice, we give more than 30 South East Queensland artists every year the room to explore, develop and test new work through The Workroom Program.
This AusArt Day, we’re opening the studio doors. Follow along for rehearsal footage, artist interviews and behind-the-scenes stories that show the rigour, risk and sheer labour behind independent practice. You’ll see where new dance actually begins, and the people who make it happen.
Please give what you can to help us raise $12,000. Your donation goes directly to artists, funding residencies, studio access and development time that they can’t get anywhere else.
Government funding and earned income don’t fully cover this work. Philanthropic giving lets us say yes when artists come to us with a bold idea, respond to demand, and back work that might otherwise never get made. It also helps build sustainable careers for independent artists and strengthens Brisbane’s performance community.
Thank you for backing the artists behind the work. Every gift, large or small, helps new dance find its feet.
